The teacher behind the ladybug.

I'm Eness Jarvis, and I've spent more than thirty years teaching. The last ten were in grades 1 and 2, where reading either clicks or quietly doesn't. Ladybug Lane Elementary is where I share the materials I actually use: printable, hands-on, and grounded in the science of reading.

No trends, no fluff. Just the practice pages I'd hand a first grader tomorrow morning.

Pen and paper, on purpose

Every resource here is printable because that's how young children learn to read: saying sounds out loud, tapping them on their fingers, and writing them down where you can watch it happen.

Hands before keyboards
K-2 learners need the physical manipulation of sounds and letters. Typing can wait; phonemic awareness can't.
Every pencil mark is a clue
Watching a child write shows me how they're thinking (a Spanish speaker writing i for e, for example), so I can meet them right where they are.
Supplement, don't replace
These pages fill the gaps in the curriculum you already teach. Sequenced practice, not another program.
Teaching children is one of life's greatest privileges and responsibilities. Every lesson, every word of encouragement, every chance to learn helps shape confident, compassionate, and capable individuals — empowering each child to discover their unique strengths, pursue their dreams, and become all they're meant to be.

Why "Ladybug Lane"?

The name comes from Under the Tuscan Sun — a woman searches all day for ladybugs and finds none, then falls asleep in the grass and wakes to find they have come to her on their own. After thirty years of teaching, that's exactly what I believe about reading: every child grows in their own time, through curiosity and perseverance, and every small success is worth celebrating. Like the ladybug, each one carries gifts just waiting for the right moment to shine.
